Yayo was a bright and curious high school student from Bandung who dreamed of becoming an inspiring English teacher. He often imagined a classroom filled with eager students, all captivated by his lessons. As his final year of high school progressed, Yayo searched for the perfect university to bring it to reality.

Isola UPI
It wasn't long before he discovered Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), a university recognised for its abundant history of excellence in education. Intrigued by its reputation, he attended an open house event on campus. From the moment he arrived, he was fascinated. The sprawling green campus, nestled in the cool hills of Bandung, emitted inspiration.
Yayo's first stop was the Faculty of Language and Literature Education (Fakultas Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra, FPBS), where he explored the English Education program. The curriculum was designed to cultivate innovative educators who could thrive in local and global contexts. The tour also introduced him to different facilities, including FPBS, Isola, the Library with its vast digital and physical collections, and the gymnasium.

As he wandered through FPBS's corridors, he encountered students enthusiastically sharing their experiences. "UPI is more than just academic learning," one student told him. "This is a place where you can grow in different ways. You can join a debate team, perform in a theatre club, or become an athlete." Listening to this sparked excitement within Yayo. He felt a stirring inside him, a call to venture into a new chapter of his life. Determined, he applied to UPI and was thrilled to receive an acceptance letter a few months later.
As Yayo began his first semester at UPI, he faced the challenges of adjusting to university life. Balancing his academic responsibilities with his interest in extracurricular activities initially proved challenging. However, he soon discovered that UPI's support system was exceptional. The faculty advisors were approachable and offered valuable guidance. At the same time, senior students served as mentors, assisting him with assignments and projects.
One of his most transformative experiences came from his involvement with the English Students' Association (ESA). As a member, he helped organise English language workshops for local schools called P2M. This initiative matched his passion for teaching. Through these workshops, Yayo developed leadership and communication skills while significantly impacting the community. By his third year, he was elected to the ESA legislative board, where he developed his skills and motivated his peers.

Yayo excelled academically in the dynamic learning environment at UPI. The interactive lectures, group discussions, and practical teaching experiences made his study engaging and meaningful. One of his favourite courses was Classroom Discourse Analysis, where he learned to analyse the interactions between teachers and students to improve learning outcomes. This course inspired him to create innovative lesson plans encouraging critical thinking and collaboration among his students.
Beyond the classroom, the facilities at FPBS played a crucial role in his development. The self-access centre enabled him to study peacefully. In addition, FPBS's backyard became his favourite place for brainstorming ideas. Whenever he needed a break, he would join friends at a nearby cafe or play golf matches in the gymnasium. These activities kept him physically active and helped him form lifelong friendships.
As Yayo immersed himself in campus life, he took full advantage of the diverse extracurricular opportunities offered at UPI. He volunteered for UPI's MBKM program, teaching English in a countryside school for a semester. This experience was both fascinating and inspiring, as it allowed him to apply his skills in a real world setting while gaining insight into the challenges faced by underprivileged communities.

By the time Yayo reached his final year at UPI, he had become a confident and competent future teacher. He was no longer the naive high school graduate who had first arrived on campus. His journey has given him the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to make a meaningful impact.
As graduation day approached, Yayo reflected on his time at UPI. He realised that the university had given him more than just an education. It nurtured his growth and ignited a lifelong passion for learning. The friendships he forged, the seniors who guided him, and the countless memories he created became vital parts of his life. With his degree in hand and a heart full of gratitude, Yayo set out to inspire the next generation of learners. This university prepared him for a career and made him compassionate and resilient.
For high school students like Yayo, UPI is not just a stepping stone. It's a transformative voyage filled with challenges, growth, and endless opportunities. It's a place where dreams come alive, and every student is encouraged to make their mark on the world.
